52100 / 1.3505 / 100Cr6 steel was chosen as a baseline grade with excellent performance for forged knives to compare against. A series of tests were performed on 52100 to see if a combination of high hardness and toughness was possible with an existing steel. Well, it was plausible, more than that – the baseline tests with an adapted heat treatment protocol were already achieving very good toughness results in the 65 HRC range. However, there was still room for improvement.
