Every development starts with a problem that needs to be solved. In the case of ApexUltra that problem was that the existing high hardness knife steels all suffered from poor toughness and many have a very mediocre purity leaving room for improvement. Overall, there has been very little development of high carbon low alloy knife steels as this is a niche the tool steel industry is little concerned about.
